In December 2007 Lafarge acquired Orascom Cement Group allowing it to further boost its position into high-growth emerging markets. Lafarge also acquired the Egyptian Cement Company, (established 1996 and started cement production in December 1998 under Early-Cement Program). In addition to being the first Egyptian private sector cement company, Lafarge followed the Egyptian government's launching of the state-run cement companies privatization program.

-Lafarge Cement Egypt is the second biggest cement factory in the world. In 2008, Lafarge Cement Egypt gained the second largest market share of approximately 21% with a capacity of 10.6 million tons of Cement and employing around 1700 employees & sub contractors.
